Restoring School Grounds Following Classroom Construction
Vista Environmental Landcare completed a specialist hydroseeding project at Taupō Intermediate School following the construction of new classrooms.
Earthworks and heavy machinery had left the surrounding outdoor areas uneven, depleted and unsuitable for student activities. The project focused on re-establishing grass coverage across the disturbed ground and helping the new classroom areas integrate with the school’s existing fields and outdoor spaces.
A tailored hydroseeding application was used to establish a resilient lawn suited to the demands of a busy school environment.
The site challenge
Construction activity had significantly disturbed the grounds surrounding the new classrooms, leaving exposed soil and uneven areas that required attention before the spaces could be used again.
The challenge was to establish grass coverage efficiently while managing surface dust and protecting the disturbed soil during early growth.
As the work took place within an educational environment, site safety and minimising disruption to students were also important considerations throughout the application and establishment process.
What Vista completed
- Assessed the construction-affected school grounds requiring grass restoration.
- Prepared a customised hydroseeding mixture formulated for high-traffic school environments.
- Combined durable perennial turf seed with protective mulch, tackifiers and slow-release starter fertiliser.
- Applied the hydroseeding slurry across the disturbed areas to encourage consistent grass coverage and help protect exposed soil.
- Followed site safety protocols throughout the work within the school environment.
- Supported lawn establishment through a managed irrigation period before the grounds were handed back to the school.
Initial seed germination was reported within 7–10 days. Following the establishment period, the restored green space was handed back to the school for everyday use.
