Rural Slope Erosion Control in Waipū
Vista Environmental Landcare completed an erosion control and hydroseeding project at a rural property in Waipū, Northland.
Newly formed clay batter slopes had been left exposed, creating a risk of soil erosion and sediment runoff into nearby freshwater streams.
The project combined temporary silt fencing with a specialised hydroseeding treatment to protect vulnerable soil surfaces and establish vegetation across the steep terrain.
The site challenge
The newly engineered batter slopes consisted of exposed, low-nutrient clay that was particularly vulnerable to erosion during heavy rainfall.
With freshwater streams located nearby, managing sediment movement was an important consideration.
The work required an approach that could provide temporary sediment control while supporting the establishment of deeper-rooting vegetation across the steep clay surfaces.
What Vista completed
- Assessed the newly formed clay batter slopes and surrounding erosion risks.
- Installed temporary silt fencing along sensitive boundaries near the freshwater streams.
- Prepared a specialised hydroseeding mixture containing deep-rooting grass seed, wood-fibre mulch, organic tackifiers and slow-release fertiliser.
- Applied the hydraulic slurry across the exposed clay slopes to create a protective mulch and seed layer.
- Supported vegetation establishment to help reduce surface erosion and sediment movement.
- Completed revegetation of the engineered banks to integrate the repaired landscape with the surrounding rural environment.
The supplied project record reports initial germination within 7–10 days and full turf coverage within approximately four weeks. It also reports that the treated slopes resisted surface erosion during subsequent rainfall.
