Vista Environmental Landcare completed a residential lawn hydroseeding project at a newly built property in Opononi, overlooking Hokianga Harbour.

The project combined extensive soil preparation with a tailored hydroseeding treatment designed for the property’s exposed coastal setting.

Using a blend of Ryegrass, Fescue and Kikuyu, the application was selected to support initial lawn establishment while providing a combination of grass characteristics suited to Northland’s coastal conditions.

The site challenge

The newly constructed property required careful ground preparation before grass could be established. Post-construction debris, compacted subsoil and exposure to strong harbour winds presented challenges for the new lawn.

The team needed to prepare a suitable growing surface, manage drainage away from the house and create reliable seed-to-soil contact.

The coastal location also influenced the selection of the grass seed blend, with consideration given to wind exposure, summer heat and shaded areas around the dwelling.

What Vista completed

Cleared post-construction debris from the residential lawn area.
Scarified the compacted subsoil to prepare the ground for new topsoil.
Spread and screeded a topsoil layer, with grading designed to direct drainage away from the home.
Lightly rolled the prepared seedbed to create a firm, textured surface and improve seed-to-soil contact.
Prepared a tailored hydroseeding mixture containing Ryegrass, Fescue and Kikuyu.
Hydraulically applied the seed blend across the prepared surface, accounting for the exposed coastal conditions.

The blend combined faster-establishing Ryegrass, fine-textured Fescue and warm-season Kikuyu to support a lawn suited to the property’s coastal environment.
